Police have banned the planned demonstration by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) saying the restriction on the movement of people to contain the recent cholera outbreak was still in force.

In a press statement released this afternoon, Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi said the directive from the ministry of health to ban public gatherings in the central business district still stands.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to advise members of the public that the directive by the Ministry of Health and Child Care and Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing to ban public gatherings in Central Business Districts and other public areas still stands.

“Therefore, the organisers of the intended demonstrations by ZCTU and its affiliates should take note of the government’s directive particularly the movement of large numbers of people from one point to another which includes cholera epicentres,” said Nyathi.

According to ZCTU, the planned demonstration was against the two percent imposed by government on all electronic transactions, a move they said  will cause some companies that are already facing viability challenges to fold, thereby frustrating attempts to revive exports.
