Despite the recent price hikes on almost all basic commodities in the country, Mutare women feel hard done by the new cooking oil price-tag.
In an assessment carried out during 263Chat’s Street Dialogue episode in the eastern highlands, most women expressed less worry on the other commodities except cooking oil.
“The only reason why I’m still selling these vegetables here is to stay relevant and maintain my customers, besides that, I would be sitting at home waiting for fruit and vegetable wholesale prices to settle,” said Cecilia Mupunga a fruits and vegetables vendor operating in Mutare CBD.
“While we wait for other commodities to settle, I would love for responsible authorities to address cooking oil prices. Two liters that used to cost us $3.25 has shot up to $4 plus in some supermarkets and even $5 in our location kiosks,” she added.
Another female vendor, Purina James expressed concern on the ever surging black market exchange rates.
“Food stuff prices particularly cooking oil have risen too much, that and black market rates for foreign currency have unbearably soared such that the rates are doubling over night,” said James.
“As a young man who is staying by himself, I expected my salary to up a little more considering that bread prices have altered positively. Instead, my salary has remained constant despite the rise of our cost to survive,” said a male vendor only referred to as Tinodaishe.
Though most basic commodities have worryingly sky rocketed, to most women, cooking oil prices need urgent attention.
