Kasukuwere Granted $3000 Bail

Saviour Kasukuwere

Harare magistrate Hosea Mujaya yesterday granted a $3000 bail to former cabinet minister, Savior Kasukuwere who was arrested on charges of abuse of office during his time as Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing.

Magistrate Mujaya also ordered Kasukuwere to surrender title deeds of his Nyanga property and passport as well as reporting twice a day at Borrowdale Police Station.

The State represented by Michael Reza and Zivanai Macharaga had argued against Kasukuwere being given bail saying he only  handed himself over to the police following the issuing of a warranty of arrest.

Macharaga argued that the state’s case against Kasukuwere is very strong adding that if he is granted bail, he is likely to abscond court hearings.

However Kasukuwere’s lawyer, Jonathan Samkange argues that charges against his client have been flying since 2017 adding that the accused is not on the run.

“The State is saying the allegations are serious but the seriousness of an offense on its own is not a ground to deny an accused person bail,” argued Samukange.

Kasukuwere will be back in court on the 9th of October for routine remand.
