Zvishavane based community radio YaFm will from the 2nd to the 6th of October hold a ‘Tour de Great Dyke 550 km Annual Cycling Festival’ aimed at enhancing awareness of the immense investment opportunities across the Midlands Province.
Addressing the media in Harare today, the group chairperson, Munyaradzi Hwengwere said the motive behind the cycling festival is to educate people on the importance of natural resources abound in Zimbabwe.
“This country has a problem, the problem is that the owners of resources do not understand that this country is very rich.
“We as communicators should take a deliberate step to ensure that people know what the country has, but lets not only do it in a classroom style, we should do it in a way that will make sure that even your body is better and that creates awareness.
“That is the reason behind this tour, it is about understanding the resources that we have in the great dyke and we really want people to know and understand,” he said.
He added that the newly appointed Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Kirsty Coventry will grace the event together with the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.
“Zimbabwe’s top cyclists, mining company teams from Zimplats, Unki mine and the Mimosa mining company will be participating during the event but anyone is also allowed to come on board so that e have fun.
“We want people to understand more about the mining giants in the area including Unki, Zimplats and Mimosa who are facing challenges in trying to communicate on the possibilities of what they are doing.
” Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Kirsty Coventry will be there, the Ministry of mines is also supporting this initiative,” added Hwengwere.
The Great Dyke is a linear geological feature that trends nearly north-south through the center of Zimbabwe passing just to the west of the capital, Harare. It consists of a band of short, narrow ridges and hills spanning for approximately 550 kilometers.
