The opposition MDC Alliance has vowed to continue with its Kwekwe rally on Sunday despite police blocking the event on the grounds of the recent typhoid outbreak in Gweru.
The Kwekwe rally is the first of the party’s nationwide consultation process on the way forward following what they said is a disputed election.
Organising Secretary, Amos Chibaya told 263Chat that they have taken the matter to the high court to challenge the police decision which they described political.
“Our lawyers are going to the High Court today because there is no basis why the police should cancel our rally and we are going ahead with our preparations as we are having our meeting tomorrow and the car rally in preparation for the Sunday rally,” said Chibaya.
Chibaya said the typhoid outbreak is not a justification in light of a soccer gathering scheduled for the same day in Gweru in Ascot stadium have been given the green light.
“There is no reason what so ever because how do you justify that in Gweru where there is typhoid outbreak you allow a soccer gathering for Premier soccer league match in Ascot stadium to proceed and in Kwekwe where there is no typhoid you block us on the basis that there is typhoid…?
“It is just a way of trying to block us from having our political gatherings and we cannot allow that. Even if we had organised to meet in Hurungwe or Mutare; they were going to invent another reason to stop us because they know they rigged elections therefore they fear the moment we gather effect a program of action from there,” he said.
Kwekwe police Chief Superintendent, Conrad Mubaiwa yesterday wrote to the MDC Alliance leadership that due to typhoid outbreak in Gweru health officials had advised against the holding of public gatherings.
Chamisa remains adamant that he won the July 30 harmonized election despite the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission having declared Emmerson Mnangagwa the winner.
