Students studying in various fields of technology engineering at the Harare Institute of Technology (H.I.T) exhibited some exciting projects during the National Engineering Students Awards Competitions (NESAC) preliminaries held at the university’s campus in Belvedere last week.
The competition, which is a showcase of the university’s students’ best engineering research and development projects was graced by Engineer F Zowa and Engineer Quinton Kanhukwamwe who is the university’s Vice-Chancellor.
Mayibongwe Sibanda from the Chemical and Process Systems Engineering department scooped the first prize in the oral presentations with her Capstone Design Project entitled “Production of 15 TPD Cement from Water Treatment Sludge and limestone for Construction of Roads and Pavements”.
Michelle Chikakano of the Polymer Technology and Engineering department came first in the poster presentations with her project entitled “Value Addition to Post-Consumer Pet Bottles to Produce 100% Non-weave Polyester Fibres for the Zimbabwe Textile Industry – A case of Petrocozim P/L”.
Other exhibitors included Lovejoy Gushungo from the Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering faculty who developed an automated coal mine methane extraction control system.
Kumbirayi Nzirawa from the Electronics Engineering department designed an electronic health monitoring and tracking system for endangered wildlife species in Zimbabwe.
Talent Dewah from the Polymer Technology and Engineering faculty developed a green fuel from laminated plastic composite wastes: a case of Unilever Zimbabwe.
Patience Tariro Chiutsi from the Chemical and Process Systems Engineering department designed a plant for the Conversion of Sewage Sludge to 2500 litres/day of Bioethanol: A renewable energy alternative for Zimbabwe.
Ngonidzashe Mawodzwa from the Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering faculty developed an optimization for non-destructive quality assurance system for fruits using support vector machines.
Lloyd Mupazi from the Electronics Engineering department designed a Radio Frequency Identification Based Highway Electronic Toll Collection System.
Tanyaradzwa Masaire from the Polymer Technology and Engineering faculty designed a fabrication of a fibre-reinforced plastics lap desk for poorly funded primary schools.
