Chicken Slice opens first branch in Gweru

As usual Packers International (PI), set to open its first branch in the Midlands capital of Gweru by Saturday, will use its ‘No GMO’ (genetically-modified organism) trump card as a magic wand in an industry dominated by two other fast food outlets.

Chicken Inn opened in the city during the late 80s and the second a decade back, while Food Express, rooted in the city, has also been operating for about ten years, drawing all Muslims customers to it, thanks to its ‘Halaal’ (Arab for ‘permissible’) certified products.

When 263Chat passed by the 99% complete complex at corner Robert Mugabe Way/ Ninth Street at around 1700hrs yesterday afternoon, PI Founder and Chief Executive Tawanda Mutyebere, 39, was showing prominent Gweru businessman Enos Size around. All but one flag flew in the chilly Gweru skies, as passers-by marvelled at his maroon Jaguar.

The flags included that of Chicken Slice, the one for Creamy Slice, and the Pizza Slice one. Slice Express is also the company’s brand.

“For the company, opening a branch in Gweru is like a homecoming event after having opened its first project on May 1 2010 along the Harare-Masvingo highway at the 192km peg in Mvuma, a Midlands town,” says a site manager, who would rather company’s Public Relations Manager Bernadette Mutokwe address us.

However Mutokwe has been running around the city to the extent that despite promising us an interview, she has not been able to find the time.

Asked when the food court, which incorporates a pizzeria, coffee, ice-cream and fried chicken shops and an express convenience superette, would open, the shy manager quips: “Maybe tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday. Why not talk to Bernadette?”

Mutokwe was still not available for comment at the time of making this report.
