Leading international human rights group, Amnesty International in partnership with Safeguard security company last week held a human rights training workshop for security personnel as part of the two organisations’ plan to promote a culture of human rights among security guards.
The training, attended by Safeguard security supervisors, senior and middle management urged companies to not only respect human rights but actively protect and promote them has not yet been fully taken on board in Zimbabwe and the world.
Safeguard Security Group Training and Quality Manager, Ashley Mwanza said the training was an eye opener to the importance of human rights and Safeguard will soon be implementing the principles in their day to day operations.
“It was very helpful, an eye opener. We all have a third eye; the human rights eye. There are some things we take for granted that we now realize are actually infringements on our fellow humans’ rights.
“Following this human rights awareness and sensitivity training, Safeguard in a quest to be more professional we have started to think about how to apply the principles in our day-to-day operations.
An important component of this is ensuring that every person in Safeguard understands what human rights are and how they relate to their individual responsibilities, the company as a whole and to our clients,” said Mwanza.
He added that training and engaging employees on human rights is an important step in embedding human rights in the corporate culture and influencing decision-making.
“The realization that companies must not only respect human rights but actively protect and promote them has not yet been fully taken on board in Zimbabwe and the world.
“Safeguard is taking real action that will tangibly improve the lives of those whose rights are affected by business operations.” added Mwanza.
