Government Promises 400 000 Jobs

Government is targeting to create at least 400 000 jobs within the next two years as it moves to improve the country’s employment index, the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Petronella Kagonye has said.

Speaking at the International Labor Organisation (ILO) Dialogue on Employment Promotion in Harare yesterday, Kagonye said Zimbabwe is certainly going to improve on its employment index within two years adding that they are in the process of realigning policies, laws and legislation to ensure they are in sync with global trends.

“The rate at which we are working together with the social partners, workers representatives and employers, I can guarantee you that within two years we would have improved on our index,” said Kagonye.

“We are going to look at various sectors of economy and see how we can tap from them”, she said adding that, “We will look at the value chain right from field work, production stage up to the last stage of production to see how many jobs we can create.”

Kagonye said her ministry is going to ensure inclusivity of disabled, youth, women and the rural population which constitute the 68% of the country’s population in the creation of jobs.
