Aspiring presidential candidate and leader of FreeZim Congress, Joseph Busha has called on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to immediately stop the Bio-metric Voter Registration process citing its proneness to manipulation by the ruling party.
Speaking to journalists after meeting party supporters in Harare on Saturday, Busha said the BVR system will only favor Zanu PF as it has total control of the equipment to be used.
“The BVR is a new system which we are not well knowledgeable about and to make matters worse, people have been intimidated in rural area. They have been told that their faces will be taken when they are voting and their votes will be known, they have been told that their registration numbers will be known , so that alone tells you that the system is flawed.
“The same system has been contested in Kenya as it has some irregularities. In America there have been allegations that the Russians were meddling in their BVR system, so the stakes are too high to experiment with something that we are not used to. We need to revert back to our manual system or run them in parallel with the BVR system,” said the South African based businessman-cum-politician.
He added that the BVR system can be used as a calibration system that complements the old and manual system.
This is despite government having already exhausted millions of dollars on the project which will be used for the first time ever in Zimbabwean election
To date, ZEC has registered more than 5,3 million prospective voters with the process still ongoing until after the sitting of the nomination court.
Meanwhile, Busha is confident of his chances in the forthcoming general elections saying his party is deep rooted in the people as it has structures across the country.
“We are not a fly by night party, we have contested in the by-elections and we have structures around the country. So I can assure you that we will definitely contest and win the forthcoming elections. We will deliver a new Zimbabwe to the people,” added Busha while pouring cold water on prospects of joining the MDC Alliance.
