The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has called for the amendment of the Electoral Act to enable the holding of free, fair and credible elections, committing to do everything in their power to ensure the next plebiscite is not disputed.
Briefing the press at ZEC offices on Thursday, Commissioner Joyce Kazembe expressed ZEC’s commitment to a credible election promising to do everything in their power to make that happen.
“Commission is committed to credible, free and fair elections,” said Kazembe.
“Since now everything is in our hands, we will do everything in our power to make sure that happens,” she added.
Zimbabwe is heading towards general elections to be held between July and August.
According to Kazembe, the graph of people who registered this year has rose from 3,4 million voters of 2013 to 5,3 million of this year, (although registration is still ongoing).
“Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Faith Based Organisations (FBOs) played a collaborative role with the Commission to come up with voter education materials and to conduct voter education. Some of them targeted the youth, women and people with disabilities to cater for a wide spectrum of society.
“The electronic media provided advertisement space and free airtime to inform the electorate about BVR while the print media also carried informative voter registration messages. The Commission is grateful to the electorate for the overwhelming response towards the call to register resulting in the Commission registering a provisional figure above 5 million registrants,” added Kazembe.
