Minister of Finance, Ignatius Chombo who was among a group of Zanu PF officials detained by the military during an army operation against “criminals” around the deposed former president Robert Mugabe, was on Thursday night released from military custody and handed over to the police for legal proceedings.
Chombo who was taken into military custody on the 14th of November, was on Thursday dumped at his house by soldiers ahead of Emmerson Mnangagwa inauguration ceremony set for Friday.
According to his lawyer, Professor Lovemore Madhuku, Chombo who could have been held at KGIV is currently admitted at Parirenyatwa hospital with injuries sustained from beating and torture while in military custody.
Due to his bad condition, Madhuku said the former Home Affairs minister had taken to hospital for a medical examination before his court appearance which could be within the stipulated 48 hours.
He added that Chombo sustained injuries to his hands, legs and back and was blindfolded throughout the week and half he spend under the military custody of the army
Madhuku added that Chombo’s charges includes abuse of office during the time he was Minister of Local government, Public Works and National Housing.
Other Zanu PF Youth league members including Kudzanai Chipanga and others are also in police custody.
