Dont Compromise on Free and Fair Elections, Zim Urged

Japanese Ambassador, Toshiyuki Iwado has appealed for free and fair 2018 harmonized elections, saying his government is committed to supporting the hope of all Zimbabweans for an inclusive electoral process under peaceful and non-violent circumstances.

Speaking during the handover of US$1 Million to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Capacity Building (ZIM-ECO) initiative being coordinated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Japanese Ambassador Iwado described elections as a cornerstone of democracy and an important milestone for the country.

“Because of such vital importance attached, the electoral process has to be free, fair, transparent and inclusive. And I would add peaceful and without violence. those elements shall not be compromised,” said Iwado.

He added that his government decided to join other donors to support the UNDP project for supporting fair and transparent elections in an effort to promote the work of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

Speaking at the same event, UNDP Resident Coordinator, Bishow Parajuli highlighted the importance of Japan’s support which he said is aimed at strengthening democratic institutions in Zimbabwe in meeting their constitutional mandate.

Grant from the government of Japan increases the resources available for electoral support to ZEC and complements important financial support from the government of Zimbabwe and other partners like the European Union (EU).

UNDP Resident representative, Bishow Parajuli expressed gratitude towards the donation and highlighted the importance of this timely support which he said is a sign of commitment by development partners to support ZEC with technical and financial resources in preparation of the 2018 elections.

“UNDP in collaboration with other development partners remains committed to provide technical and financial support to ZEC as maybe required in preparation for the 2018 elections and beyond,” said Parajuli.

ZEC has indicated that it requires US$274 Million to conduct the 2018 elections.

According to ZEC Chairperson, Rita Makarau, the funding will enable the electoral management body to procure election material and to pay allowances necessary to ensure a free and fair election.
