Ministry of Rural Development, Promotion and Preservation of National Culture and Heritage on Wednesday received two vehicles worth $78 000, 10 laptops and three Desktops worth $42 000 from UNICEF towards improving service delivery and effective governance.
Speaking to 263Chat, UNICEF representative, Mohamed Ayoya said the vehicles and ICT hardware is part of joint efforts by his organization and its partners towards promoting effective governance and better service delivery in rural authorities.
“The donation of the vehicles and ICT hardware is part of joined efforts by UNICEF and partners to promote effective governance in rural local authorities and better service delivery and quality by rural authorities.
“This is an important mandate for national and social inclusion, given that 70% of the country’s population resides in rural areas, 5.5 million of whom are children,” said Ayoya.
Accepting the UNICEF donation, Minister of Rural Development, Promotion and Preservation of National Culture and Heritage, Abednico Ncube said his ministry faces mobility challenges which is curtailing its potential to perform its duties to maximum.
Ncube said mobility challenges are scuttling the monitoring and supporting for local authorities operations.
“My Ministry still has challenges militating against our full potential, mobility being the biggest impediment in monitoring and supporting local authority operations.
“As you are aware, my ministry oversees rural local authorities in Zimbabwe, which constitute close to 70% of the national population.
“l can promise that the vehicles are going to be put to good use for the benefit of the disadvantaged rural communities,” said Ncube.
