City of Harare has committed to rid the city of potholes by the 31st of December 2017 saying the road rehabilitation project is proceeding according to plan and 65 percent complete.

Speaking to 263Chat after the road rehabilitation tour in Harare on Tuesday, Engineer George Munyonga who is in charge of the project said 65 percent of work is now complete.

Munyonga added that the allocated US$17 million is not enough to see through the road rehabilitation project.

“These projects are funded from the Emergency road rehabilitation project and government allocated $17 million to City of Harare.

“The US$17 million is not enough to cover the needs of the city or that allocated to other cities around the country.

“But in our discussions we heard government is in cognizance of that fact and they are busy trying to come up with a fund sooner than later to deal with this issue of roads, once and for all,” said Munyonga.

Pothole patching is 65 percent complete with reconstruction and reseal project 35 percent done, according to Munyonga.

“So far on our routine maintenance works, we have done about 65% that is in terms of pothole patching of the selected roads submitted.

“The reconstructions and reseals program is the second phase of this program and we have covered around 35% after starting in early June,” said Munyonga.
