Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) has welcomed the decision by the Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai to direct its councilors who dominate the Harare City Council to cancel the contracts of Wellcash Debt Collectors who of late have been wreaking havoc in residential areas.
CHRA noted that Harare’s move to engage the services of debt collectors was creating unnecessary problems with residents some of whom were losing cash and property to debt collectors.
“Despite the fact that there is no Act of Parliament in Zimbabwe which empowers debt collectors to attach property or issue threats on behalf of creditors, Wellcash Debt Collectors have been terrorizing residents, some of whom lost their hard earned cash as the debt collectors were charging an extra 10 percent of what residents owed council.
“Moved by the development, CHRA held a series of engagements with councilors and community meetings to educate residents on the illegality of debt collection in Harare. As CHRA, we are on record urging residents to resist debt collectors and therefore the recent directive to cancel their contracts is a huge relief for residents who were living in fear of losing their property following numerous threats by Wellcash Debt Collector,” noted CHRA in a statement released to the media on Tuesday.
CHRA believes the cancellation of Wellcash Debt Collectors’ contract will mark the end of terror and extortion subjected to Harare residents and called on City of Harare to move with speed in implementing this directive.
