Rotaract, Carex Gang Up Against ‘Yekedero’

Rotaract Club Harare has partnered with CAREX on a campaign aimed at educating youths on the need to condomize as a preventive measure against HIV/Aids.

In an interview with 263Chat, the club’s President-elect Gilbert Chiminya said the campaign is a reaction to harmful messages that made rounds on social media celebrating unprotected sex.

“We have noted with great concern that there are many harmful messages and trends running in social media that just go unchallenged. One of these trends is the “Yekedero” message in which people have shared, mostly memes carrying the message that they have unprotected sex.

“It is from this trend that we wish to launch a counter campaign to raise awareness about the risks of Yekedero,” said Chiminya.

Yekedero is a street lingo that started became popular since last year in reference to unprotected sex and has become popular among the youths.

Chiminya said due to the absence of censorship of what people share or receive on social media, this could encourage youths to engage in risky sexual activities that may lead to the spread of HIV/Aids.

“Despite all the bad that may come with social media, an equal opportunity is also provided for good information to also spread, thus it is our intention to leverage the power of social media to further our cause,” he added

As part of the partnership, CAREX will provide condoms that will be freely distributed to youths in tertiary institutions where the rate of unprotected sexual activities remain high.
