Addressing a Press Conference in Harare on Wednesday, Tinotenda Mhungu, UZ-SRC President said Moyo gave them an explanation on his abuse of funds meant to benefit tertiary students but was quick to say it was far from the truth.
Mhungu said as a generation they have been divorced from the realization that higher education in an investment for any country.
“Tertiary students have become the mirror reflection of poverty due to the removal of grants.
“On grants, Professor Moyo has hidden behind the adjectives to suggest that student loans are granted on the basis of ability to pay back not on a need basis which becomes criminal in a country where the majority is living below the poverty datum line “, said Mhungu.
He said the Parliament Portfolio Committee on Education failed to present itself and answer questions on their recommendations during a pre-budget seminar in Bulawayo after calling on government to stop funding universities.
“This presents a serious threat to students who will become the central income generation base for universities,” added Mhungu.
