City of Harare has begun repairing dysfunctional sewer pipes to curb flooding recently witnessed in Mbare and other parts of the city.
Following flooding which destroyed property worth thousands of dollars, City of Harare moved in swiftly to repair and replace the pipes along Mbirimi, Chinamhora and Mwamuka streets.
According to City of Harare, they have assessed the area and discovered that the flooding that happened in Mbare was caused by sewer reticulation pipes at the Gulf Sunshine Bazaar that were clogging the drainage and blocking smooth flow of sewer.
Speaking during an assessment tour of Mbare to assess progress made, Acting Harare Town Clerk Josephine Ncube said they have started re-excavating drains and pipes that were causing increased surface run-off leading to floods.
“We have managed to repair most of the pipes which were causing flooding here in Mbare and it is our belief that by the time we are done with the process, we will not have any such problems again.
“Our engineers have worked tirelessly to make sure the pipes are fixed. The main problem was that some of the pipes were blocked when this shopping mall was constructed but we have re-aligned the pipes so that the building does not block the flow of underground sewer,” she said.
She added the process of re-aligning the pipes will take close to a week after which a full assessment will be done before re-opening them to the users.
Ncube said the other pipes are being blocked by the Total Fuel Service Station and plans are underway to open and re-align them so as to reduce future flooding.
With the country experiencing excessive rainfall, most parts of the country have been hit by floods due to poor drainage systems.
