Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai has extended its begging bowl to Zimbabweans in South Africa with a fundraising dinner in Johannesburg slated for the end of this month.
MDC-T said the fundraising dinner is aimed at mobilizing resources for the 2018 elections, which are likely to be held in less than 18 months, according to the country’s constitution.
“Come and Join the leading Political and Business leaders as well as opinion makers as they grace this occasion.
“Funds raised will be channeled towards fighting for democracy in Zimbabwe especially, as the epic 2018 elections beckon,” reads the memo.
In an interview with 263Chat, MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu could not shed light on the fundraising dinner saying he needed clarification from his superiors before he could give more details about the event.
Eyebrows will be raised as to the motive behind hosting a fundraising dinner in South Africa when the majority of MDC supporters are in Zimbabwe. Perhaps it could be that the party enjoy popular support from diaspora community who in most cases may be engaged in some form of employment and have disposable income to channel towards an election they hope MDC-T to win so that the situation back home can turnaround.
MDC-T has been fiercely campaigning for diaspora vote, dual citizenship, return of “political and economic refugees” ahead of the 2018 elections.
