The Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCOZ) has called on the President of Zimbabwe to implement the constitution of Zimbabwe in the appointment of ministers and deputy ministers. The coalition has also demanded a gender-balanced and youth-inclusive cabinet, with a special focus on young women.
Mercy Jaravani, the Programs Manager at WCOZ, said that the constitution of Zimbabwe, which was adopted in 2013, provides a strong framework for the promotion of gender equality and women’s rights. She said that the President must adhere to the standards set by the constitution, particularly sections 17, 56 and 104, which mandate him to be guided by the principle of gender balance in the appointment of ministers and deputy ministers.
“We have to adhere to the standards set by the constitution of Zimbabwe, particularly section 17,56,104 which mandates the president of Zimbabwe to be guided by the constitution of gender-based in the appointment of the minister and deputy minister,” Jaravani said.
She also said that the WCOZ was pleased to note that there was a remarkable crop of female parliamentarians who were equally qualified and competent for the job in the 10th Parliament. She said that there were many women who could hold ministerial positions and contribute to the development of the country.
“We are pleased to note as the women`s movement that we have a crop of remarkable female parliamentarians who are equally qualified and competent for jobs in the 10th parliament,” Jaravani said.
She further said that the WCOZ had a key interest in the portfolios that were traditionally held by male ministers, such as mines, energy, justice and environment. She said that these were key sectors that affected the lives and livelihoods of women and girls and that women should have a say in their management and governance.
“Regarding the portfolios, we have a key interest in those held by male ministers, especially the mines, energy, justice and the environment,” Jaravani said.
She also appealed to the President to consider the inclusion of young people, especially young women, in the cabinet. She said that youth were the future of the country and that they should be given an opportunity to participate in decision-making and leadership.
“Youth inclusive especially young women in the cabinet,” Jaravani said.
She said that the WCOZ would continue to monitor and advocate for the implementation of the constitution and the promotion of gender equality and women’s rights in Zimbabwe. She also said that the WCOZ would support and work with the government in advancing the social and economic empowerment of women and girls.
