The ZANU PF Mashonaland Central province executive member and Chitungwiza Town Clerk George Makunde has been fingered as the main ‘culprit’ behind Chitungwiza Mayor Lovemore Maiko’s terror attack.
The opposition, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) claimed that the ZANU PF aligned town clerk, working in cahoots with land barons, connived to beat up Maiko for suspending Makunde.
Maiko was brutally attacked inside the municipality’s Town House and the MDC says they have strong suspicion he was attacked by ZANU PF youths at the instigation of Makunde.
“He was attacked inside the Town Clerk’s Office by over 100 ZANU PF thugs brought to the Town House in several trucks by several known land barons who are working in cahoots with the Town Clerk George Makunde to loot council land prejudicing bona fide home-seekers.
“The Mayor was in the process of serving the Town Clerk with a suspension letter when the thugs barged into the office and brutally assaulted him. Makunde is a member of the ZANU PF Mashonaland Central provincial executive,” said MDC Deputy National Spokes person, Luke Tamborinyoka.
Last week, the Town Clerk reportedly engineered trumped-up charges against the Mayor and his deputy to cover up his imminent suspension.
