Opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Treasurer General David Coltart has describe as travesty of justice the arrest of party Organizing Secretary Amos Chibaya on charges of failing to stop the August 16 organized demonstration in Harare.
This is despite the fact that the MDC was issued with a prohibition order stopping the demonstration at the 11th hour.
Commenting on Chibaya’s arrest, Coltart said, “MDC Organising Secretary Amos Chibaya has been granted bail of RTGS$400 on the charge of not being clairvoyant- the regime charged him with failing to stop organising a peaceful march which was only banned at the 11th hour. This is a travesty of justice.”
Chibaya, who has since been freed on RTGS400 bail, was arrested Friday last week and was charged for failing to take steps to stop demonstrations.
Chibaya was the convener of the MDC’s much hyped countrywide demonstrations that were later barred by the police under controversial circumstances.
The combative Mkoba legislator is currently on bail of yet another charge of subversion emanating from the January 2019 disturbances for which he has been slapped with reporting conditions.
Meanwhile, the MDC national Vice Chairperson Job Sikhala also appeared at the Bikita Magistrates courts today and was further remanded until the 1st of November 2019.
Sikhala was arrested and charged with subversion following his remarks at a Bikita rally that they would overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Government of Zimbabwe has come under heavy criticism from the international community over the deteriorating human rights situation that has seen over 20 people charged with subversion while many have been abducted and tortured including popular comedienne Samantha Kureya (Gonyeti).
