Government has accused the opposition of deliberately causing violence to force national dialogue saying it will not budge if political parties engage in lawlessness to attract attention.

Early last week, Zimbabwe was engulfed by violent protests over a hike in fuel prices, reportedly leaving 12 people dead and hundreds injured.

Addressing a media briefing at State House today, Presidential Spokesperson George Charamba warned that government will not budge if political parties cause violence In the name of forcing dialogue.

“When it comes to national dialogue, that a necessary accompaniment in any democratic system but if its dialogue that is predicated on violence on causation, that will not fly.

“The key thing for all parties, including those in opposition to know, is that there is a way of engaging government without necessarily having to bring in people to do lawlessness and destroy property and cause loss of life in the country,” said Charamba.

Soon after his return from his four-nation tour of Eastern Europe, Mnangagwa called for a national dialogue to absolve the country from the current economic problems that have seen the cost of living shooting beyond the reach of many.

Mnangagwa’s call has been received with mixed feelings by the opposition with MDC leader, Nelson Chamisa saying government should release its supporters as a pre-condition for dialogue.
