We will crush opposition demo- Chombo

Government has once again threatened to descend  heavily on organisers of the opposition’s mega demo slated for today. Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Ignatius Chombo said government will crack a whip at those who engage in violent activities during and after the demonstration.

“I wish to remind Zimbabweans that the police is still mandated to protect life and property.  We will not tolerate any attempts by any group of persons, political parties, civic organizations or individuals whose actions will undermine the peace and quiet that Zimbabwe enjoys today,” Dr Chombo warned.
He added that the demonstrations currently happening in the country signal the works of Western Countries who want to see regime change being effected in the country. He however said, that is not possible as government is ready to defend its sovereignty.
“We are fully aware of the intentions of the opposition political parties and various groups which is to court international intervention in Zimbabwe’s internal affairs- this will be stopped.
We cannot sit idly by while our country is being torn apart by unruly foreign sponsored agents,” he said.

Meanwhile Minister Chombo has condemned the violence and looting that happened in Harare Central Business District on Wednesday and assure the nation that perpetrators will be brought to book as government is in the process of identifying those that broke into several shops and looted.
He said “the government of Zimbabwe condemns in the strongest terms, the Western Sponsored violent protests that erupted in Harare on 23rd August 2106 perpetrated by the opposition parties and their affiliate civic organizations.
Protesters went on a rampage damaging property and in the process, a police vehicle was burnt while business was disrupted as well as movement of people,” Dr Chombo said.
