Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association has paid tribute to the late Cuban leader, Fidel Castro who died on Saturday at the age of 90, saying he should be respected for the role he played in liberating Southern Africa.

Addressing Journalists in Harare on Monday, ZNLWVA Chairperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa said Castro was a great patriot and pan-Africanist.

“We want to pay homage to one commander in chief, comrade Castro, he was a great patriot who was also a pan-Africanist.

“The freedom of Africa was always at his heart, and all he advocated for, was the freedom of Africa,” said Mutsvangwa.

Listing some of Castro’s major contributions in Africa, Mutsvangwa said he moved the agenda of freedom in Africa, including the training of army personnel.

He added that Castro first brought the idea of training African soldiers in a modern way which was never done before.

Asked to comment on Mugabe contesting the 2018 elections, Mutsvangwa said President Mugabe must resign and be honored like what former Cuban leader did.

“I will use Comrade Castro as an example of what Mugabe should do, Castro died at 90 but he had already resigned and for that he became a hero and that is why we are here, honoring him,” said Mutsvangwa.
