Mugabe’s appeal to Zuma

President Robert Mugabe has called for unity of purpose with his South African counterpart Jacob Zuma in fighting what he termed renewed assaults on sovereignty and independence of the two countries by opposition movements.

In his opening remarks at the inauguration session of the Bi-National Commission between South Africa and Zimbabwe, President Mugabe appealed for a strong relationship with South African to tackle political assaults in the country.

“Comrade President, we need each other more as we face renewed assaults on our independence and sovereignty,” said President Mugabe.

President Mugabe added that the Bi-National Commission is a positive step towards economic and political ties between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

“This close up in the economic and political sphere is the best way for our countries to relate. Our relations demand that we work closely, in a manner that will make Limpopo River, the physical colonial boundary imposed between us, meaningless.

“Let us, therefore, work together to improve the flow of investments in both direction, in a manner that reinforces partnerships between us,” said President Mugabe.

Meanwhile President Jacob Zuma endorsed the unity idea.

“Our two countries have to unite because we fought for this liberation during the liberation struggle,” said Zuma adding that the relationship between Zimbabwe and South Africa that started a long time ago has to be sustained.

He however added that the two nations had been hard hit by El Nino induced droughts which will only be dealt with if countries unite.

“Our countries have been hard hit by droughts, so we need to unite together and help our country sisters in the region as well,” added President Zuma.

Zuma has been facing criticism from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Democratic Alliance, who are calling for his resignation amid damaging reports of state capture by the Gupta family. In Zimbabwe, opposition parties and movements have renewed calls for Mugabe to among other things resign for failure to reign on his corrupt minister.

Preparatory meetings for the Bi-National Commission began which were chaired by Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and his South African counterpart Maite Nkoane Mashabane began on Monday, culminating in the commissioning ceremony addressed by the two heads of states.
