Manyuchi stings in Russia

Zimbabwean boxer, Charles Manyuchi produced arguably the fight of his life to defeat his Russian opponent, Dmitry Mikhaylenko in a 12 round bout at the DIVS Arena in Russia yesterday.

Manyuchi won 116-114, 118-110, and 115-113 in a unanimous decision by the judges. He is now the New WBC Silver Welterweight Champion, a belt once held by Britain’s Amir Khan.

The 27 year old Zimbabwean, who won his second straight fight on European soil, after his last win in Italy, could have boxed his way to a multi-million dollar fight, in the near future, after defying the odds to beat Mikhaylenko before a capacity 27 000 home crowd for the Russian.

Having last fought competitively nearly a year ago in July, many feared the boxer would be ring rust, while his opponent who was unbeaten until he met the Zimbabwean superstar ,has been fighting on the circuit regularly.

Manyuchi missed months of training after being involved in a contractual wrangle with his Zambian promoters and only returned to action after the Minister of Sports and Recreation Makhosini Hlongwane intervened to bring the two parties back together.

It was the Russian’s first defeat in 22 professional fights and he went into this one as the odds on favorite. However, Manyuchi showed his tactical prowess in bringing the Russian down.
